Overview
In recent years, Oracle has changed the licensing terms for the Oracle JDK (Java Development Kit), which has raised concerns among businesses about whether they need to purchase a commercial Java license. This article clarifies Portfolio DAM's use of Java and what, if anything, is required from you.
Short answer
No, Portfolio DAM customers do not need to purchase a Java license from Oracle.
Details
Portfolio bundles its own Java runtime environment as part of the installation. The bundled runtime is based on a freely licensed distribution — not Oracle JDK — so it is not subject to Oracle's commercial licensing requirements.
Specifically:
- Portfolio ships with a bundled JRE that is included in the installer and is separate from any system-wide Java installation you may have.
- This bundled runtime is licensed under open-source terms (such as the GPL with Classpath Exception) and does not require a commercial license.
- You do not need to install Oracle JDK or OpenJDK separately for Portfolio to function.
What about Java installed on my system?
Portfolio does not use the system-level Java installation (if any) for its core server functions. If you have Oracle JDK installed on the same machine for other software, that is a separate matter and subject to Oracle's licensing terms for that software — not Portfolio.
